Project Mission, Goals, and Objectives (PDF 31kb)

Project Description

The Cornell and Barnes Road project seeks to improve conditions for all modes of transportation - vehicles, transit, pedestrians and bicyclists - in the Cedar Mill Town Center area. The project limits are from Murray to Saltzman on Cornell Road and from Saltzman to the future 119th Street (near Stark Street and Johnson Creek) on Barnes Road. The project will widen Cornell Road to three lanes (one lane in each direction plus a center turn lane) and Barnes Road to five lanes (two lanes in each direction plus a center turn lane). Bike lanes and sidewalks with street trees also will be added to both roads. The section of Cornell between Dale Street and Barnes Road will have on-street parking.

The need for the Cornell and Barnes Road project was identified by the County in the mid-1990s. At that time the County identified safety and congestion problems on these roadway sections and requested funding to address them. Washington County voters approved this funding in May 1995, when they approved the Major Streets Transportation Improvement Program (MSTIP-3).

Recognizing that this project is very important to the Cedar Mill community, Washington County and its project team created a public involvement program to keep interested people informed and involved as the project continues. A key element in the program was the formation of a Project Advisory Committee (PAC), an advisory group that provides recommendations to the County. The PAC worked with the project team to establish goals and objectives for the project, to review draft alternatives, and to recommend selected alternatives. The PAC was made up of representatives from neighborhood groups, the business community, public agency staff, property owners, and public interest groups. The public involvement program also included a number of public open houses to get input from the broader community. For information on past and future public events, see project schedule and monthly calendar.
