Our Future Depends on It

The Southern Delivery System (SDS) is a regional water delivery system that will provide a cost effective, environmentally responsible and dependable way to deliver water we need for our future.

Hundreds of possible project options from Leadville to Lamar were studied. After extensive study and public input, a pipeline from Pueblo Dam emerged as our Preferred Alternative and on July 22, 2009, the Colorado Springs City Council voted 8-1 to move forward with the Preferred Alternative. A pipeline from Pueblo Dam was chosen because:

A reservoir intake is superior to a river intake for both water quality and operations and maintenance.
It will require fewer miles of pipeline.
The Upper Williams Creek Reservoir associated with this alternative has fewer environmental impacts.
This alternative has higher firm yield and lower energy costs.
Using Pueblo Reservoir leverages our community’s $65-million-plus investment in Fryingpan-Arkansas Project facilities, including Pueblo Reservoir.

Security, Fountain and Pueblo West will also use the Southern Delivery System to transport water. The project also includes facilities to store and treat the water for drinking, use in our homes and businesses and to maintain the lifestyle we enjoy.

We need the Southern Delivery System. Without it, we can’t maintain our quality of life and healthy economy. Our future depends on it.

SDS will take water directly from Pueblo Reservoir.

"I want to build on the legacy of the visionaries before us, so that our children and grandchildren have the same quality of life we enjoy today. To accomplish that, we must secure water for our future. The Southern Delivery System will provide clean, reliable water for generations to come.”
