Colorado Springs will build the southern Delivery System in an
environmentally responsible manner. We take our environmental commitments
seriously, and have for many decades. Among the areas where we’re
“walking our talk” when it comes to protecting the environment
and responsible water management:
| • |
Water
Conservation: Our per capita residential water use is
the lowest along Colorado’s Front Range. Our community
used 5 billion gallons less water in 2007 than in 2001, despite
a 10 percent increase in population. |
| • |
Water
reuse: An important portion of our city’s water supply
is provided by treating wastewater for irrigation of public
and private properties with nonpotable water. In fact, we pioneered
the recycling of treated wastewater for irrigation in the 1960s.
Colorado Springs has the second largest nonpotable-water system
in Colorado. |
| • |
Fountain
Creek: We’re taking a number of steps to improve
the quality of streams within the region – including Fountain
Creek. As the region’s largest city, we recognize Colorado
Springs has a significant responsibility for Fountain Creek
– and our community has stepped up to doing our part to
improve the quality of this important waterway. |
