Background

State Road (SR) 528 is a limited access expressway extending from an interchange with Interstate 4 in central Orange County to US 1 in Brevard County. This facility has been serving the regional travel demand between central Florida and the Space Coast since the late 1960’s. No significant capacity enhancements have been added to the roadway since its original construction. Traffic volumes on SR 528 have been steadily increasing and are projected to continue growing into the future.

Purpose

The Department initiated the SR 528 PD&E Study in January 2004 to evaluate alternate ways to widen SR 528 between SR 520 and the new Port Canaveral Terminal B Interchange. The purpose of performing a PD&E Study is to ensure that all characteristics of the SR 528 corridor, including engineering, natural environment and socio-economic are considered prior to selecting a preferred improvement concept. The systematic evaluation of these characteristics will help identify the improvement concept that truly meets the transportation needs of the corridor with the least amount of impacts.
